AREA: Prairie County is in the east-central plains of Montana and encompasses approximately 1.1 million acres which covers approximately 1,700 square miles. Close to 99% of land in Prairie County is used as agricultural land, with 94% of the land operating in farms and ranches. Some of the county consists of a rugged stretch of badlands, more pronounced here than in any other part of the state. Badlands are areas with steep slopes, narrow divides, and closely spaced gullies. Prairie County has less than one person per square mile.
