The Yellowstone River starts just south of Yellowstone National Park, travels north into Montana until it ultimately flows into the Missouri River. William Clark of the Lewis & Clark Expedition and Sacagawea traveled the river in 1806.  Montana agates can be found along the entire length of the Yellowstone River in Montana.  The stretch of river between Forsyth and Sidney contains some of the most highly prized deposits of agates.  

Fallon is an unincorporated town in Prairie County.  Fallon was once known as the sheep shipping capital of the world.  The current population is approximately 140 people which translates to 27 people per square mile.   Fallon has a post office, a small repair shop, a well cared for the park and the BD Bar & Restaurant.  BNSF Railway travels through Fallon.  


AREA:  Prairie County is in the east-central plains of Montana and encompasses approximately 1.1 million acres which cover approximately 1,700 square miles.  Close to 99% of land in Prairie County is used as agricultural land, with 94% of the land operating in farms and ranches.  Some of the county consists of a rugged stretch of badlands, more pronounced here than in any other part of the state.  Badlands are areas with steep slopes, narrow divides, and closely spaced gullies.  Prairie County has less than  one person per square mile.  Much of the land is natural grass, sagebrush, and rough country.  The towns located in Prairie County include Terry, Fallon, and Mildred.

SCHOOLS:  Terry is the county seat of Prairie County and offers a phenomenal school system consisting of Elementary (K-3), Middle (4-8) and High School (9-12) schools. Extracurricular activities include Class C Junior High and High School basketball, volleyball, football, and track.  Elementary activities include basketball, baseball, drama.  Seasonal adult classes are also offered such as pottery, woodworking, and quilting.  

CLIMATE:  Prairie County is described as having a continental climate, with cold winters, warm summers and marked variation in seasonal precipitation.  Prairie County has about 200 days of sunshine per year.  Although annual precipitation varies in eastern Montana, the average annual precipitation in Prairie County ranges from 10 to 14 inches.  Most precipitation falls as rain during the April to September growing season.

WILDLIFE:  Prairie County is in the sagebrush-grassland prairie of the Yellowstone Valley, once considered the greatest hunting area in the west.  The wildlife resources in Prairie County are a major attraction for hunting, fishing and recreation enthusiasts.  Nearly all the lands in the area are considered habitat for wildlife. 

SUMMARY:  Terry is located within a transportation hub including I-94, BNSF railroad, a local airport and the Backcountry Byway (Highway 253).  Terry is a community-based town with a thriving business district, rural lifestyle and small-town atmosphere.  Prairie County is in the heart of Big Sky country and is a mecca of scenic beauty and tranquility.  Wide-open spaces with abundant wildlife are everywhere.  This was once the “wild west” people traveled far and wide to get to.
