TOWN OF TERRY:
About the Town: The Town of Terry is the seat of Prairie County and is rich in history. It is a small, rural community located at the junction of Hwy 253 and Old Highway 10, just off I-94. Surrounded by rugged buttes known as badlands, Terry sits on the south bank of the Yellowstone River. Terry is a picturesque town made up of friendly faces, tree-lined streets and homespun hospitality. It is a town that despite its close proximity to the interstate has remained largely unaffected by outside change over the years, due in part to the predominance of public lands within the county. Many of the houses, and a majority of the shops, are buildings that were constructed at the turn of the century by family members of people who still live here. The town has a great deal to offer in terms of culture, ambiance, and recreational opportunities. (Terry Growth Policy, 2013)
Schools: Terry is the county seat of Prairie County and offers a phenomenal school system consisting of Elementary (K-3), Middle (4-8) and High School (9-12) schools. Extra curricular activities include Class C Junior High and High School basketball, volleyball, football and track. Elementary activities include basketball, baseball, drama. Seasonal adult classes are also offered such as pottery, woodworking, and quilting.
Climate: Prairie County is described as having a Continental climate, with cold winters, warm summers and marked variation in seasonal precipitation. Prairie County has about 200 days of sunshine per year. Although annual precipitation varies in eastern Montana, the average annual precipitation in Prairie County ranges from 10 to 14 inches. Most precipitation falls as rain during the April to September growing season.
Summary: Terry is located within a transportation hub including I-94, BNSF railroad, a local airport and the Backcountry Byway (Highway 253). Terry is a community based town with a thriving business district, rural lifestyle and small town atmosphere. Prairie County is in the heart of Big Sky country and is a mecca of scenic beauty and tranquility. Wide-open spaces with abundant wildlife are everywhere. This was once the “wild west” people traveled far and wide to get to. ©Eastern Montana Land & Home
