AREA: Prairie County is in the east-central plains of Montana and encompasses approximately 1.1 million acres which covers approximately 1,700 square miles. Close to 99% of land in Prairie County is used as agricultural land, with 94% of the land operating in farms and ranches. Some of the county consists of a rugged stretch of badlands, more pronounced here than in any other part of the state. Badlands are areas with steep slopes, narrow divides and closely spaced gullies. Prairie County has less than one person per square mile. Much of the land is natural grass, sagebrush and rough country. The towns located in Prairie County include Terry, Fallon and Mildred.
SCHOOLS: Terry is the county seat of Prairie County and offers a phenomenal school system consisting of Elementary (K-3), Middle (4-8) and High School (9-12) schools. Most precipitation falls as rain during the April to September growing season.
WILDLIFE: Prairie County is in the sagebrush-grassland prairie of the Yellowstone Valley, once considered the greatest hunting area in the west.
